Ryuichi Sakamoto, Thousand Knives (1978)

Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the most beloved and prolific figures in modern Japanese music, a highly revered and classically trained musician, composer, record producer, singer-songwriter, activist and actor. Ryuichi Sakamoto is most well-known as one of the founding members behind the electronic techno-pop music phenomenon Yellow Magic Orchestra, a truly revolutionary group and perhaps the most influential and iconic Japanese band of all time.

Yellow Magic Orchestra, Solid State Survivor (1980)

Ryuichi also maintained a highly successful career outside of YMO working as a solo artist. He's the acclaimed composer of several award winning film soundtracks including The Last Emperor (1987), Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (1983) ~ [Which he also starred in] and The Revenant (2015).

In order to honour this legendary musical figure, Psychic Garden are proud to present a short experimental film for the song "Grasshoppers" - A piano composition from Sakamoto's debut album Thousand Knives (1978). The video was directed and edited by resident creative Denholm Hewlett.

~ We recommend checking out the documentary "CODA" for an immersive portrait of Sakamoto's masterful career and creative process. Don't forget to listen to the title track of Sakamoto's debut album, "Thousand Knives" ~
